The Garden is Growing!

The garden is growing, but there is much work still to do and plants to plant.  First though we need to get the weather to cooperate.  People here are telling us this has been the coldest and wettest winter in a long while IMG_2024so we are hoping it is just a fluke and not the start of a new kind of winter, though it does have it’s benefits.  Surely the plants loved all the rain, some didn’t like all the cold however so there are things to remove and replace giving me a chance to try something new is never a bad thing in my book.

Here is an updated picture of the herb garden.  There is still some work to be done and growing that needs to happen, but it does look like there will be some warmer days ahead so I can’t wait to see the change in about a month from now.  I am still looking for some ideas on how to hide the edge of this dish.  You have to have it sticking up a bit because the gophers will crawl right over if you don’t.  I have considered using some of those rolls of rice straw and liningIMG_2026 the outer border, but I am hoping that as the oregano and thyme that I planted at the edges grown they will hang over and hide it all naturally.  Right now this bed has a lot more plants than it looks like in the picture because I like to start small, but I will be adding lots more.  Currently though there is:

  • Garden Sage
  • Variegated Lemon Thyme
  • French Tarragon
  • Summer Savory
  • Echinacea ‘Harvest Moon’
  • Sweet Marjoram
  • Variegated Oregano
  • Feverfew
  • Italian Parsley
  • English Lavender ‘Royal Purple’
  • Greek Oregano

“Where’s the Basil?” you ask, “Every herb garden needs basil!”  Well, I currently have 6 varieties of basil growing in the green house and as soon as it gets warm enough at night to let them out they will have a whole bed all to themselves, unless I change my mind.  I love basils so I have grown all my favorites and have already been harvesting some of their little leaves and enjoying the very different flavors that each has to offer.   My basil varieties will include:

  • Cinnamon
  • Cardinal
  • Marseille
  • Red Rubin
  • Pistou
  • and lots of Genovese, of course!

Let’s get this garden growing!

Hi Ferne!! Your garden looks fabulous. You are such an ambitious gardener with all those plantings. Can't help you with the rodent dilemma as we don't deal with those things here in the islands. I hope you manage to keep them away from your garden.
Aloha!
