Planting for Fall

The removing of the summer crops has begun and we are thinking fall here in our zone 9 garden. It has still been feeling like summer most days with teasers of cooling off periods and threats of a first rain. We love everything about fall...the crisp air, falling leaves, the smell of a ripe apple...mmm!!!

We started planting our fall crops just last week. There are some radicchio, broccoli, garlic, onions and much more to come. We planted some onions from jumbo packs so they were already started. You just pop the block out and separate each little start. I dig a little bit of a trench and place the onions a couple of inches apart so they will have room to bulb up and push the dirt back leaving just a little bit of the green tip sticking up. They are very hardy little starts and don't seem to mind having their roots tugged and pulled apart at all. Last year we planted some bare root onions with great results, we will probably get those in later, but for now we had some starts come in to the nursery of Walla Walla and Candy so we thought we would give them a try. Hopefully there will be more time for gardening in the coming weeks and hopefully we will remember to bring the camera
